Summer Fun... At Summer's End

I have had this quilt on my wish list for quite some time.  In fact, longer than I thought.  I decided early last month that if this was going to be a fun summer project, I should get started!
Here is the start on my design wall on August 9.  This is pure fun playing with 2 1/2" strips of colorful fabrics and black and whites.
I purchased this pattern by Karen Griska as a download on Etsy almost 2 years ago.  The pattern calls for narrower strips but I decided I wanted to show off my fabrics a bit more so I made them slightly larger.  I  have included a link to Karen's Etsy shop here.  She has great patterns and some great tips for laying out this quilt.
I knew I had enough colorful fabrics for this quilt, but over time I picked up a nice selection of black and white or black and cream fabrics with this quilt in mind.  I also added some white on white and solid white fabrics.
I started by just laying out the color strips of various sizes on my design wall.  This was totally addictive!  The white you see is the surface of the design wall.
My studio assistant was available for a color consultation.. whether I wanted it or not.
Next I filled in the open spaces with my white and black & white fabrics.  At one point I realized I was losing my design by not including enough solid or white on white fabrics. No problem, that was an easy fix since I had not sewn them together yet.
I had more fun strip piecing my rows.
And then sewing rows together two by two. :-)
Sew, press, repeat.

Until sets of rows became sections of 4....
As you can see from today's photo, the quilt is bigger than my design wall and I am almost done piecing.  This certainly has been summer fun!!  And just in time with the unofficial end of summer upon us.

Enjoy your Labor Day weekend, and I hope you find time for some fun sewing to finish out your summer.

Happy Stitching,

Deb

  1. I agree with Lucy that your quilt needs just a pinch more of "Portly Orange" and fewer gray and white cat fabric. : )

  3. Might be a good way to use up some scraps of fabrics too and get a great quilt from it. You choices of colors are a great mix which I'm sure Lucy just loves.

  5. I've always loved this design and had planned to make it earlier this year for my nephews high school graduation. But instead the fabrics I bought had a different idea and it came out a bit differently. But that's ok. They knew what they wanted. :)
