No Willpower!

There is so much temptation out there... and I have no willpower!
Thanks to Wendy at Snippets of a Quilter for this inspiration.
So earlier this week, when no one was looking (he-he), I snuck down to my studio and cut some red and white squares to use my Lil Twister ruler... which I had never used after purchasing it probably a year and a half ago.  Okay.. so do I get credit for finally using a tool that I bought and hadn't used??  Is there an acronym for that..?   ... UQT? Unused Quilting Tool, maybe? :-)

Fun and easy to use!

Piece of cake to make this 18" x 18" heart.
Before I knew it, it was time to baste my Twisted Heart together!
What do you use to baste your quilts?  I have always used thread, and in particular this Basting and Bobbin thread.  Here is why I like this so much... it is 100% cotton and it is very thin.  It is made to break easily - which is a good thing.  It won't cut or tear your quilt or pull your quilting stitches.  And it comes out of  your finished quilt really easy.  Now I mention all of this because I have been trouble finding it in my local store where I buy most of my thread. I finally was able to find it online and was so excited.

Who knew someone could get so excited about a spool of thread?
Only a quilter...
If you see the Quilt Police outside of my house.....  I'll be hiding downstairs in my quilt room with Lucy.

Shhhhhhhh!

  1. OH, my goodness!!!! This is SOSOSO beautiful. I don’t think I have ever seen a heart I like any better than this. It is absolutely gorgeous. I do not have a clue as to how you use your Lil’ Twister. I would need a tutorial. I came along when we quilted from swinging frames hanging from the ceiling and cut everything out with scissors. I have all of these plastic guides with the line going every which way and have no clue how they are really supposed to be used. Whatever you are doing with it seems to be working beautifully because the end product is heavenly. Happy Quilting

  2. That looks like great fun...I want to make one too!
I use old thread for basting... but mostly use pins these days.

  4. I haven't fallen to this temptation yet, but your little quilt make me want to run out and get this ruler. I used to use the thread I inherited from my husband's grandmother, but as of late I just use basting pins to baste.

    1. It was the quilt that finally had me digging this ruler out of my stash. It was so much fun!

  5. Love your quilt top... it is totally darling.. can't wait to see that quilted :) It will be fun whatever you decide for that... I love that you and your stash and an UQT made that flimsy so stinkin cute! As for basting I don't use a hoop or frame and I stretch very taut and pin baste... however I love being a thread snob with my hand quilting thread and don't mind that I am! So you should be proud you found a way to baste that you like... and your fave thread to do it with to boot! Yay :) Kathi

  7. I've used the 405 Basting Spray on my quilts. I like it for smaller projects. Oh, I have that Lil Twister ruler, too. Just like you, it is still in the bag but it's there waiting for me when I'm ready. Love your heart.

    1. I hear a lot of quilters using old thread to baste - good way to use it up! Isn't the ruler great? I think next I will make a table runner. Very simple, but lots of pizzazz!

    1. It is a little hard to find. I finally did a search and found it at a fabric vendor in California. I was so excited. Coats + Clark still lists it on their website, so I assume they are still making it. Love how thin it is - works great for me!

  14. I love that heart!

I didn't know that there was basting thread! The only thing that I worry about is if it will break as the quilt is handled ... I hand quilt exclusively, and as I turn my lap hoop, my quilts get a pretty good work out. ;-)

    1. I am currently hand quilting the Twisted Heart. I have used the basting thread for all my quilts.. small to queen size. I have never had it break from handling. I also use a lap hoop and have never run into a problem. :-)

  17. I've been thinking that i will also make an attempt to dodge the quilting police while i sneak in the QAL being hosted by Lori at Humble Quilts . . . so many projects, so little time~!
i think that if you get caught you may be able to get a reduced sentence since there is an UQT involved . . .
AND you're already quilting it. there's probably another reduction possible due to a super speedy finish . . .

it's very cute and i especially love that red paisley background fabric. lovely stuff.

i baste my quilts with thread and i was gifted a huge cone that i may need nine lives to use all the way up.
speaking of nine lives, Lucy is toooo cute~!

  19. What a refreshing and enjoyable post, Debra! Yes, I think you should get credit for using a tool you were saving for just the right project. And it turned out beautifully! As for the thread.... I know how you feel. I am waiting on a shipment so I can get back to quilting some of these tops that are piling up! Cute kitty!
